I don't know much about art, but i know what i like

Are you like me? Do you breeze through art museums or galleries looking for what you like and bypassing the rest? I used to visit art museums on my lunch hour from work! No one visit was very long but I got to see a lot of great art that way. In our world of constant interruptions and multi-tasking, looking at art takes precious time.

Don't Be Afraid to make Short visits!

Fifteen minutes? Thirty minutes? No problem! There are plenty of free museums, exhibits, and galleries to visit. Taking young children to expose them to fine art is best kept to short time frames anyway! You get to see something to fill your spirit and the kids get to see some things they've never seen before, including those guards who seem to hover over my shoulder making sure I don't touch anything!

Insulate yourself

The best way for me to enjoy art is to go by myself (or with kids or grandkids cause they aren't paying attention to me anyway), or with another like-minded person. I watch for the clumps of visitors and go the other way. There is no need to be influenced by someone else's opinion of the art by standing too close and hearing what they are saying. I know what I like and I also know what I don't like. The point is to engage one's vision, not someone else's. The artists are speaking with a visual voice and I try very hard to hear what they are saying to me. Some art speaks louder to me than others.

art is for everyone

There is a long tradition of craft in America and many crafts persons are also artists, fine artists. Making art is something children are introduced to at a young age, sometimes simply to pass time. You probably have something you made at a younger age at your home! Every artist who wants to be an artist can be, regardless of education or training. It's wonderful to learn about fine artists or crafts persons who had no formal education or training. (Jean-Michel Basquiat, Vincent van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, Grandma Moses, Yoko Ono, and Susan Hudson, a Navajo/Diné artist from Sheep Springs, NM), The next time you go to a museum remember that art is the great equalizer.
