When You Don't Know What To Do

Writer: Betsy HornBetsy Horn

"When you don't know what to draw, draw something." ~ Janis Bryant

This image looks familiar, right? There is nothing to do, nothing planned, or I'm waiting, so I guess I'll look at my phone. Pretty soon, an hour has flown by and I'm late for something, anything. Wasting time can kill me. What I mean is that it can kill my spirit. It can suck the life right out of me. And what do I have to show for that hour? Probably nothing. Hopefully, a few laughs. We all need more laughs in our days.

We Don't Always Have A Mission

Why do I have to work? Why do I have to wash the dishes, clean the bathroom, take out the trash, sweep the sidewalk, pick up someone else's trash? I do these things because they are there, needing to be done in order for me to have a sane life when I'm not doing those things. It's unbelievable how short a time it takes to do the dishes. I can wash an entire sink of dishes in 5 minutes and we don't have a dishwasher. When I sit around avoiding these things that nag at me, I grow geometrically uncomfortable compared to the amount of things that need doing. The thrown out can in the street just gets bigger and bigger and I shrink smaller and smaller. Just Do It.

Artists Aren't Inspired All the Time

Janis, my art teacher, used to get perturbed at her students who would complain, "I don't have anything to draw/paint!" That was no excuse. Right now in front of me are several things I could sketch: a coffee cup, a cellphone, a Bluetooth speaker, a vase of pencils, pens, markers, rulers, and scissors, a cup of paper clips, a window with curtains, an easel with nothing on it, a light switch, a door, this room.

The Moral of This Story

There is always something to do and something to draw or paint. It's up to me to make things happen in my life. Prince Charming or The Millionaire aren't coming. I won't win the lottery because I don't play. This year I'm focusing on perspective, resilience, and commitment. It's 10 o'clock in the morning. I have already made the bed, washed the dishes, showered and dressed. Now I'm going to start a painting of a tree in the neighborhood. It pleases me to do these things. It makes my world a little nicer place to live in. It feeds my spirit even when it appears to be mundane.

Thanks for reading this far.
